I don't know what this vine is but it is carpeted with purple and yellow flowers. I have taken some cuttings to see if I could get it to take root.

I created a new bed in the front yard (beside my driveway) this past weekend. I figured that seeing the driveway garden everyday when I come home will keep me energized about getting into the backyard where the "real" work is. I planted 3 tomatoes and 3 pepper in that bed. Surprisingly, that spot gets plenty of sun. There use to be a huge hickory tree in this area that dropped hickory nuts on our cars and driveway. It fell last year during a bad wind storm. The soil seems very good. I guess 50 years of decomposing nuts helps and what hasn't decomposed keeps the soil airy.

Today, I planted some cantaloupe on the mound of dirt that I created from the sod removal of the new garden beds. I also thought I'd add some basil seeds to each end of the tomato bed. I read that basil is a great companion plant to tomatoes. I planted some rosemary in the bean bed; once again, companions. Finally, I planted some chives in the corner of the 8x8 bed. Hopefully something will come up.

I have been experimenting with blackberry cuttings. I did not have good luck with the rose cuttings, but maybe blackberries will do better.

I noticed the first flower on my cucumber today, yippie! I don't know why i'm so happy, i hate cucumber.

Garden update 4-19-2009

Here's a supersweet. This thing is suppose to get 14' tall.















This is my onion bed. Can you tell I like onions?















I got a little lazy and didn't want to create a new bed for my okra. I removed the sod in six, one square foot spots. Then, I tilled it down to around one foot deep with a garden fork. I mixed in some of my freshly harvested worm castings and planted 3 okra seeds per hole.
















This is a jalapeno pepper I grew from seed.

hmmmm Salad!!!!

So there I was, looking at my lettuce bed. It called out to me, "Eat me, Jeff, eat me". Well, who am I to let the lettuce down?

Here it is. Yummy lettuce and a couple of spinach leaves for good measure.















I added some Gruyere cheese.














Then some cheddar cheese.














and who would want a salad without bacon bits?














and finally some creamy Caesar dressing.














OH YEAH! I ate it right in front of the rest of the little lettuce soldiers.

The Good Friday planting results

Well I know it's hard to tell, but here are my six garden beds. That's right there's a new one!

Here is the bean bed. They haven't come up yet. I'm hoping for about 12 plants.

The 8x8 bed has 3 tomatoes (my wife's). There is a tabasco pepper, 2 cayenne peppers, 2 jalapeno peppers, 2 bell peppers and 6 cucumbers.

This is a new bed I made. I'm going to try to squeeze 6 to 8 roma tomatoes into it. It'll be a tight fit, but I think they'll fit. Also, I hilled the rows to see if that does any better

This is a tomato bed. There are 2 super sweets, 2 yellow pears and 4 romas.

Here's the onion bed. There are also peanuts, strawberries and 3 elephant garlic plants.

Last but not least; this is the potato bed. I planted around 32 potatoes, but as of now there are about 10 plants showing.

I think i may have bitten off more than I can chew! There is a lot of work to be done.

And it begins

Today is hopefully (hope is not a strategy) the last cold day of the spring. I had planted my cucumbers a couple of weeks ago and I think they paid the ultimate price.














I have five more plants waiting in the bullpen, but I had wanted to try to get ahead of the game.




My onions are doing very well. I planted onions at two different times. I bought some bulbs and planted them at the end of February. Last week my father gave me some extra starts that he had so I put those in the ground too. If everything grows; I'll be buried in onions.















I planted about 50 of these from bulbs and they're about 10 inches.

















This is one of about 6 "Texas Sweet" that have been in the ground about a week.
















This is one of six purple onions that were very small. They're doing quite well so far.

Right now everything else is safely sitting inside waiting for warm weather.
